On October 29 1943 Henry (Harry) Hubber embarked on an incredible adventure, cycling non-stop from Christchurch to Invercargill, covering a gruelling 365 miles or 587km. Eighty years later, on the same date in 2023, our senior accountant at McClean & Co, Thijs Henry Hubber, Harry’s grandson, is set to replicate this remarkable journey.
Harry Hubber was obviously a man of immense determination and ambition. His epic ride symbolised his unwavering spirit and love for adventure. However, beneath his tenacious exterior he battled mental health issues.
Growing up, Thijs was inspired by the legend of his grandfather’s ride and, even though he never got to meet him, he felt a desire to honour his memory. So, on October 29 2023, he’ll cycle the same 365 miles non-stop. But this isn’t just a personal challenge; it’s a mission to raise awareness about mental health.
Mental health affects millions worldwide, yet the stigma surrounding it often prevents people from seeking help. Thijs’s ride will be a platform to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation and shed light on this critical issue.
As he follows Harry’s path, Thijs will be connecting with his grandfather across generations. This journey is about understanding Harry’s resilience and vulnerability, advocating for mental health, and turning a family story into a message of hope and unity.
Join Thijs on October 29, 2023, as he rides for a cause, honouring the past, supporting the present, and working towards a future where no one has to suffer in silence. Together, they can make a difference, one pedal at a time.
